Shooting a Video with an iPhone: Before You Film

shooting-a-video-with-an-iphone

If you are shooting a video with an iPhone, there are 5 things you should think about BEFORE you press record.

1. STORAGE

How much storage is available on your phone? Do you have a 16 GB or 128 GB phone? Videos take up a lot of storage. Before you start shooting, delete excess media (old videos, music, photos) to clear out space and make room for your new videos.

2. BATTERY

Recording video can eat up your battery so make sure you have a fully charged battery to start and consider bringing an external battery, just in case.

3. IMAGE STABILIZATION

No one likes shaky video so double-check your Image Stabilization settings beforehand. Use a hand-held stabilizer for roaming shots and a tripod for static shots.

4. RESOLUTION

Know which resolution you plan to shoot in.

For videos that will go online, go with at least 1280 x 720 but 1920 x 1080 is your best bet, especially if your final video may footage from other types of video cameras.

Most phones can shoot up to Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) and can also shoot in a square format (1440 x 1440) which is great for videos you plan to share on social media.

5. AUDIO

Plan how you will capture audio.

If you’re capturing interview or testimonial sound bites, consider using an external mic or even a 2nd phone to record high quality audio.

If you’re recording in a quiet room, the internal mic on your phone will be A-OK but using an external mic will elevate your sound if you’re in a busier environment. Learn more about that HERE.

Do you just want to shoot video visuals that will be edited to a music track? Easy! Then you don’t need to worry about capturing audio at all.

That’s it! Keep these 5 things in mind before you film your next video with an iPhone.
